In Class Writing 1/27/11

"Nike Knows", this is one of the latest campaigns for Nike's latest training gear. It is basically saying that the best athletes in the world "know" that the best training and performance comes from wearing Nike. There may be instances in which we as an audience do not even know who the athlete is on the shirt, but when we see the Swoosh logo, we automatically assume that they are the best at what they do, and in order to be like them, we must train and perform in Nike. For example, Tim Tebow was the hottest quarterback coming out of college last year. He won numerous National Championships and Heisman Trophies, so he’s arguably the best at what he does. When we walk through the mall and see a t-shirt that says “Tebow Knows” with the famous Swoosh on it, we feel like we should buy Nike because Tebow does. The athletes name alone sells the shirt. Nike also uses a wide range of athletes from Tim Tebow (football), Manny Pacquiao (boxer), Albert Pujols (baseball), and Kobe Bryant (basketball) just to name a few.
The audience is universal, meaning that everyone in the world can relate to every athlete in some way. They could be from the same country, share the same interest, or give them hope. I know for a fact that when I was a little boy and I saw anything that had to do with Michael Jordan, I wanted it right then and there no questions asked. Therefore, when we see the name if our favorite and most beloved athletes, we can’t help but stop and look. In reference to the “Tebow Knows” his name has all the power in this dynamic. As you can see, his name is big going right across the top of the shirt, and there’s a tiny Swoosh below it. Big names sell, and Nike is using his name and saying, “Tebow knows that in order to become great, you have to wear Nike.” And we as foolish consumer are basically brainwashed because we tell ourselves that if he knows, I must know as well. In addition to selling to the consumer, Nike is also slapping competitors, such as Adidas and Reebok, in the face; fundamentally stating that the best athletes in the world “know” that there is nothing better. Why would you train in another shoe or any kind of gear if it doesn’t make you the best? This message in universally effective once again, because of the wide range of athletes the Nike uses to sell their products year round, every major sport that you can think of, there is a Nike endorsed athlete. There may be a few places in which this ad is affected such as places with no television, internet, or electricity at all. But nonetheless, there is eventually a time when they see the swoosh somewhere. Soccer is the biggest sport in the world, and the Nike swoosh itself is a universal symbol that everyone wants on their cleat. All in all, everyone knows that Nike is the best; and their getting the point across.
